Charleston Supplemental Security Income
Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a federal program that provides financial assistance to elderly or disabled people who are unable to earn an adequate income on their own. Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance, it is available to people regardless of their employment history.
A disabled person who is supporting a child can also apply for Child Disability Benefits.
Who is Eligible for SSI?
The federal government sets strict requirements that must be met before a person can file for Supplemental Security Income. Specifically, a person must:
- Be over the age of 65 and/or disabled
- Be living on a limited income (income includes a person’s salary, financial support such as unemployment benefits or SSDI, and money from family or friends)
- Have access to limited wealth (wealth in includes a person’s savings, land, life insurance policy, and personal property)
The exact definition of “limited” can vary depending on your location, number of dependents, and other variables. To learn about the details of your specific case, contact a Charleston SSI lawyer today.
Applying for SSI Benefits
You must meet with an SSI representative to file an application. It is possible to meet with representatives on a walk-in basis, but it is strongly encouraged that you call to schedule an appointment beforehand. There is no charge to apply for benefits.
In order to receive your benefits, you must provide medical documentation of the disability that is responsible for your limited income. Advice from a Charleston disability attorney can greatly increase your chances of receiving benefits on your first attempt. If you are denied benefits initially, you can appeal with the assistance of your attorney.
