Charleston Epilepsy Lawyer

Epilepsy has a difficult history filled with a stigma for those who have suffered through one of the many different known strains of the condition. Even today, it is widely misunderstood as single disease, when in actuality there are dozens of separate epilepsy disorders. Although there are substantial overlaps of symptoms between many of them, each possesses its own unique manifestation, cause, and treatment.

Epileptic Seizures

The only uniform characteristic across all epileptic syndromes is the presence of seizures. The cause, frequency, duration and treatability vary from case to case. Some people are able to successfully manage their seizures and other symptoms through medication, but there is no known cure for the condition.

As if a seizure disorder in itself weren’t complication enough to interfere in an epileptic worker’s ability to perform the functions of her job well, transportation can be a great hindrance as well. This is because many states have laws that prohibit a person with epilepsy from driving.

Some exceptions may be granted if the driver can prove that she has been free of seizures for a certain period of time and that medication has been effective in symptom control. Unfortunately, though, a significant portion of the epileptic population is unable to drive, which can greatly impair their ability to get to and from a place of employment.
