Drug-Free Workplaces Get 5% Workers Comp Discount

by Administrator 28. December 2009 09:50

The Council on Alcohol and Drugs has announced that it is partnering with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce to help promote drug- and alcohol-free workplaces in South Carolina.  Under state law, workplaces certified by the state to be drug-free earn a mandatory 5% discount on their workers compensation insurance premiums.

The Council on Alcohol and Drugs is a 40-year-old organization dedicated to preventing drug and alcohol use in the workplace.  The new coalition hopes to fight to increase the number of businesses receiving this discount.  Drug-free workplaces have better productivity and are more efficient.

Jury Awards BP Workers $100 Million in Lawsuit

by Administrator 21. December 2009 02:38

A federal jury has recently awarded nearly more than $100 million dollars to 10 workers who claimed they were injured after being exposed to a toxic substance in a 2007 plant explosion.   The explosion was one of the worst industrial accidents in recent history which resulted in 15 people killed and at least 170 injured.

The jury deliberated for nearly one and a half days before coming to their decision that would end the three-week trial.

BP spokespeople have stated that the decision will appeal.

by Administrator 14. December 2009 02:55

A construction worker has recently been killed in an accident that took place while on the job.  The accident occurred when a house fell off of the foundation it was on and struck and killed a worker.

The worker who was killed was 57 years-of-age.  The worker was killed after the other workers were attempting to lower the house when the house slipped.  All the other workers were able to get away except for the victim.

The accident is currently under investigation.  Authorities hope to have a better idea of what caused the work accident to occur and take the life of the 57 year-old man.

Two Workers Injured on Dallas Cowboys Stadium Roof

by Administrator 4. December 2009 08:00

Two workers that were on top of the roof of the new Dallas Cowboy's stadium were injured after falling and sliding nearly 250 feet.  The workers almost fell off the top of the roof,  but stopped in a gutter at the edge.  Emergency officials have stated that if the individuals had gained a bit more momentum and slid past the gutter,  that the accident would have been fatal.

One of the workers called 911 from his cell phone and alerted emergency officials of the injury.  Emergency officials arrived shortly later.  The two workers were brought down from the top of the roof and transported to local area hospitals to be treated for their injuries.
