Machine Crushes A Road Worker's Legs

by Administrator 27. May 2009 01:50

An accident late Tuesday night was caused when a large transfer machine crushed the worker's legs. Transfer machines are used to transfer heavy loads from trucks.  The worker was a part of a large project to repave a stretch of road on U.S. Route 128 that is about three miles long.

Emergency workers responded to the accident, and the worker is currently being treated for his injuries.  The man was taken to a hospital for his injuries.  The company has not yet made a comment on the scene, and the identity of the injured man is not yet available.

Road Workers at Risk

by Administrator 22. May 2009 06:30

Individuals who work on road construction or road repairs are at risk from a variety of dangerous factors.  To begin,  the actual act of building or repairing  road can be dangerous.  The power tools used, the large vehicles such as tractors, and other tools all pose unique risks to the workers.

Other risks, and possibly the most serious, come from drivers on the road.  These drivers can sometimes run over or strike workers who are near the side of the road.  With this in mind,  it is extremely important to observe and obey all traffic laws designed to notify of workers around an area.  Many times, the workers are not able to hear or see a car approaching because of the noise of the highway, so it is up to the driver to take the proper safety steps.

Overhaul of Workers' Compensation

by Administrator 20. May 2009 01:56

Lately, many Republican and Democrat leaders have been trading words on how current workers' compensation programs can be improved.  The Republicans have traditionally been for the business, where as the Democrats have traditionally been in the interest of the worker.

It is disappointing in some ways because both sides have valid points about steps that could be used to improve the current system.  Both sides typically take an extreme approach, and do not actually look at the valid points made by the other.

For the system to be improved it essentially comes down to, how can costs be cut while still providing the compensation and benefits that injured workers deserve.

by Administrator 18. May 2009 02:27

A Maryland worker is being treated for an accident that resulted in a serious injury to the man's hand.

The company that the accident happened at was the Victory Racing Plate Company.  The company has been in business for over 80 years making sport horseshoes.

While working on Friday morning,  the man got his hand caught in a 60 ton horseshoe press. Emergency workers showed up to see the man's hand caught in the equipment.  Emergency crews removed the man's hand from the equipment and took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

North Carolina May Cap Workers' Compensation Payments

by Administrator 15. May 2009 01:29

The North Carolina House has recently looked at a bill that proposed a cap on workers' compensation payments in the state.

One of the main parts of the bill would be that workers' compensation payments would begin to end after 65 years-of-age unless the worker made an appeal in front of the state.

Proponents of the bill state that this type of legislation will allow the state to compete with other states in attracting more businesses, which would increase the number of jobs in the state.  Further, some believe it would cut down on the number of fraudulent claims.

Opponents of the bill state that this would be taking away the rights and benefits of the little guy, and that this would hurt workers overall.

Drugs Can Increase Work Place Injuries

by Administrator 13. May 2009 02:17

The use of drugs by an individual has a dramatic effect on that individuals work place performance.  It is important that work environments remain drug-free for the safety of the individual, but also for the other workers that may have to rely on that individual.

It has been found that the likelihood of injury increases dramatically if an individual is on a drug in the work place.  Many prescribed drugs contain warnings that indicate that machinery or heavy equipment should not be operated, but sometimes these warnings are ignored.  Simply put, drugs should stay out of the work place for the benefit of all.

If you have been injured because of another individuals actions, or possible drug use,  you deserve workers' compensation to help with the injuries.

If you or someone you know has been injured on the job and is in need of workers' compensation benefits, contact the Charleston workers' compensation attorneys of The Steinberg Law Firm at 843-720-2800.

Senate Labor Committee Approves Workers' Compensation Increase

by Administrator 11. May 2009 01:53

Last week,  the Senate Labor Committee approved bill S-785 that provided an increase in the annual cost of living for individuals who are on workers' compensation for a permanent injury that has disabled them after December 31st, 1979. The current legislation only allowed cost of living adjustments for individuals who had been permanently injured before 1980.

Proponents of the bill state that it is a matter of fairness and that is unfair that those injured before 1980 had these payment adjustments, but those after did not.

The final bill has yet to be approved, but if it does get approval,   changes will be slow.  The bill would not actually go into effect until  July 1st, 2011.
