Honorio Pena, formerly employed by Executive Plumbing in Corona, California, has finally been convicted of fraud after misleading his company for over three years. He was initially injured in February 2005, when he dropped a copper pipe that hit him on the ankle. Pena filed a workers' compensation claim which stated that the injury had caused him serious pain in many different parts of his body, from his foot to his back. As time went on he added claims of sleep disturbance, stomach problems, and more. His company owned workers' compensation insurance through a private company called California Contractors Network. Suspecting fraud, the network repeatedly denied Pena's claims, leading the many doctors he saw to filed liens against the company. Finally CCN's private investigators were able to build a strong enough case. A judge waived the $45,000 supposedly owned to Pena and the additional $45,000 in liens. Pena has been sentenced to two years in prison. Because of workers' compensation fraud, employees with genuine injuries have an increasingly difficult time winning the benefits they need.
