Workplace Allergies
Many people suffer from allergies in the workplace. Dust, pollen, mites, fungus, and pet dander can
exist in all work environments, even in office settings. In addition, certain industries are more hazardous
than others to people with moderate to severe allergies. In some cases, allergies can cause severe reactions
and even become disabling or cause severe medical problems.
If you suspect that your severe allergy symptoms are caused by workplace allergies, you should take
steps to identify the problem and fix the situation.
- Identify the source of your allergies. Have you experienced allergies previously in your life, or only
at your new place of employment? Do you only experience symptoms while at work? These questions and
other inquiries can help you determine if your workplace is making you sick.
- Unclutter your workspace to eliminate exposure to dust and mold. Dust your own space regularly and use
a tabletop air purifier to keep the air around you clean.
- Request that your coworkers do not smoke near you. Tobacco smoke can aggravate allergies. Ask a supervisor
or employer about creating non-smoking areas.
Your workplace can take steps to reduce your exposure to allergens, including:
- Checking the air cleaning and ventilation systems and replacing with more efficient equipment to improve
overall air quality.
- Keeping equipment or machinery enclosed in order to keep emissions contained or to collect dust and
allergens.
- Keeping workspaces properly cleaned and maintained.
