The South Carolina OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, widely known as OSHA, was written in response to widespread concern about the large number of workplace injuries in the US. The Act requires employers to protect their workers from any known hazard they could encounter, including dangerous machinery, toxic chemicals, and extreme heat or cold. The Act also created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also called OSHA, which is in charge of enforcing these requirements.

South Carolina, along with 25 other states, has its own state-level OSHA that works in accordance with federal regulations. The Act allows states to add their own modifications to the federal laws, although they cannot make their own requirements more lax than the nation’s. In our state, OSHA is overseen by the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.

If you have any questions about our state’s individual regulations, ask a Charleston workers’ compensation attorney from the Steinberg Law Firm by calling 843-720-2800.

What the South Carolina OSHA Does

The agency plays an important role in keeping private and government workers all over our state safe on the job. Their staff includes 17 safety inspectors and 12 industrial hygienists. The agency promotes workplace safety by:

  • Compiling data about common workplace injuries and their causes
  • Offering safety consultations to employers who request them
  • Investigating claims of hazards or employer negligence filed by workers
  • Publishing information about workplace safety
  • Recording and publishing information about businesses’ safety records

If you are concerned about the safety level of your job, you need to file a complaint with S.C. OSHA by visiting their offices or website (http://www.llr.state.sc.us/Labor/Osha/). If you are having any difficulty making your complaint heard, a Charleston workplace injury lawyer can help.
