Logging Accidents
Logging is a vital part of the economies of many rural areas across the country. Unfortunately, it is also a very dangerous profession that requires a lot of agility. There are a huge number of logging accidents, both minor and serious, on an annual basis.
First of all, the majority of injuries in logging accidents are not caused by the chainsaw or anything breaking. They are caused by falling objects like tree limbs, logs falling off a truck while loading, etc. 67%, or just over 2/3rds, of all logging accidents care in fact by things falling on the logger.
After falling items, equipment other than chainsaws causes 14% of all of the injuries. This can be a harness breaking, a rope snapping, or any other equipment that is used in the logging industry. Chainsaws do not actually fit into this group.
“Other” causes caused 13% of accidents. One of the named things in the category was “lightning.” Injuries from lightning make sense considering, in some cases, the logger is at the top of a tree completely exposed to the caprice and whims of a bolt of lightning.
Trucks, cars, and other vehicles cause 4% of all logging injuries. Shockingly enough, chainsaws are responsible for only 2% of all logging accidents. On top of that, only 1% are really caused by the chainsaw or logger. Half of all of the chainsaw injuries involved the logger being knocked into the chainsaw by another object and then being injured by the chainsaw.
