Injuries During the Industrial Revolution
Any individual who has ever been injured in a factory and who has workers compensation insurance should count him or herself fortunate and blessed not to have been injured in a similar factory at the turn of the 20th century or during the original industrial revolution.
During the industrial revolution, factories were extremely dangerous places. As the factories became more and more powerful with pieces moving faster and faster, injuries became more and more common. The injuries could have been as mild as burns to the hands or arms, or as severe as having limbs amputated by the machinery, or death.
At this time, there was no workers compensation. The best that a family with an injured wage earner could hope for was a kind and generous factory owner. If a factory owner was generous and appreciated his or her industrious employees, the family might have been given a stipend or something similar to cover the loss of the injured or deceased individual’s wages.
Unfortunately, the majority of factory owners were not generous or likely to distribute income to compensate a bereft family for their loss. This meant that not only was the employee injured, but his or her job had probably already been given to someone else and there would be no way to cover the medical expenses of the injury. In addition, no income would come in while the individual was recovering or looking for a new job to replace the one lost due to an injury.
For these reasons and many more, anyone employed in a dangerous or potentially dangerous working environment should feel quite fortunate if they have the security of workers’ compensation benefits.
